For a long time Portugal has lived in the shadow of its larger neighbour, Spain, but the country has recently shown strong property growth and although Portugal is one of the cheapest places in the EU to live, it is the huge popularity of golf that is the main factor in its property’s growing capital appreciation – particularly in the Centre and North of the country.

Channel 4’s A Place in the Sun recently conducted a survey putting the Lisbon Coast and Silver Coast of Portugal at no. 3 on their Top 20 list of places that offer the best capital appreciation over the next 10 years with an anticipated 360% return.

Labelled the "real Portugal", its tourism industry is not yet as developed as on the Algarve but it has many wonderful beaches and a wealth of history and culture in its towns and villages. There are now cheap flights to this area from the UK and property prices are significantly lower than properties further down the coast on the Algarve.

Lisbon is a wonderful capital city, with enough sights and facilities in and around to make it a favourite destination for visitors.

Within a short drive you can find stunning sandy beaches and picturesque fishing ports like CASCAIS and SESIMBRA, or the stunning hilltop town of SINTRA with its royal palaces and breathtaking views over the ocean and hills, now a World Heritage Site.

Unlike the Algarve, this area remains undeveloped and retains all the character of "Old Portugal" with a history stretching back years. Occupied by Romans and Moors, there are many castles and historical buildings which have been protected and restored.

With a Mediterranean-type microclimate, this coast has mild winters and a perfect summer temperature, which never gets too hot. Autumn is ideal, like a second Spring.
