Costa Brava
Just a day’s drive from the Channel Ports
and close to the border at the foot of the Pyrenees, this is
undoubtedly one of the most picturesque
regions in Spain. It has a stunning coastline with many pretty
coves sheltered by pine trees, glorious sandy beaches with
clear blue waters
and many unspoilt fishing villages along the coast.
This region is steeped in history with its origins dating back to
the mediaeval era. The region has retained its Catalan character, with
its strong influence, not only in its architecture but also in its
cuisine for which it is renowned.
ROSES is a thriving fishing town , situated just
half an hour from the French Border and 30 minutes from GIRONA
airport. BARCELONA is
a one and a half hour drive. Roses is probably most famous for
its two marina developments – EMPURIABRAVA and SANTA MARGARIDA.
Most of the properties have their own moorings and this is
an ideal location
from which to sail up the coast to France, across to the Balearics,
or down the stunningly beautiful coastline to Barcelona and beyond.
On the hillside behind Roses there are a number of locations where
individual villas can be built and a limited number of plots with stunning
views are available.
FIGUERES is the lovely county town, some 15 minutes inland, where
the famous DALI MUSEUM is situated. Perelada Castle is a short drive
away, renowned not only as a Casino but also for its wine and world
famous concerts held in the beautiful grounds of the castle.
L’ESCALA is a small town of around 8,000
inhabitants and is one of the most picturesque and interesting
places on the Costa Brava,
retaining its original character. It is situated on the south
side of the Bay of Roses.
Just outside the old “village” of L’Escala are the
historic and extensive Greco-Roman ruins of Empuries. It is here in
1992 the Olympic Torch arrived on the last leg of its journey to the
Barcelona Olympic Games. On the sea side of these ruins are a number
of beautiful pine-sheltered sandy beaches which are just a few of the
many superb beaches in and around L’Escala. The clear waters
are ideal for snorkelling and scuba diving.
The old village grew up around the fishing industry
and to this day the anchovies from L’Escala are world famous.
It has an excellent marina which has recently been extended.
Building is strictly limited
in height and density due to strict planning by the local town
hall.
SPORTING FACILITIES IN THE BAY OF ROSES
The sporting facilities are second to none. The large protected
Bay of Roses, with its stunning coastline, is ideal for all
types of water sports – SAILING, WINDSURFING, WATER SKIING and DIVING.
The small airport at Empuriabrava is famous for its PARACHUTING and
many championships are held here.
There are several superb golf courses in this area, all with at least
18 holes. The best known is the Championship Course at PALS, where
a second course has recently opened. There also excellent courses at
GOLF EMPORDA, TORREMIRONA and PERELADA.
SKI RESORTS: There are 13 Ski resorts on the Spanish
side of the Pyrenees, with several well known resorts on the
French side, offering a superb
choice of skiing locations. The lower slopes are just one and
a half hours’ drive, with the more renowned resorts of LA MOLINA
and SUPER MOLINA, about 2 hours away.
